Julie Astin had planned a brilliant event: Looking at the results I don’t think anyone took the same combination as anyone else, job well done. It certainly kept you thinking. Interesting that a good portion of the competitors had their best result of the league, or very close to it. The facilities were excellent and the caterers produced some really good food.

In the Men’s Open League Alan Blanchflower couldn’t find the 6 points needed to overhaul Rob Finch for third place so the positions stayed the same with Nick Jarvis winning, Dan Cope second (for the second year running) and Rob Finch third. Peter Suba who won on the night almost made the podium; being just 15 points adrift. Nick and Rob couldn’t make the prizegiving as they were at POM in Portugal, although quite why they would want to orienteer there rather than Queens Park in the dark I just don’t know!

In the Ladies Open both Tereza and Becca paid for their exploits at Cherhill with under par performances at Queens Park, allowing Jo to increase her lead. Although it’s the same three ladies as last year, they have been generous enough to move things around; with Jo winning, Tereza second and Becca third. Obviously next year is Becca turn to win. Becca, Alison Innes and Dan Cope attended all 19 races in the series – wow!

In the Ladies Handicap League Tereza continued to top the whole league and with Kirsty Staunton in second place being away for the last three races, Tereza was never seriously challenged. Jo Pickering picked up third, which for a W21 in the Handicap is quite an achievement.

In the Men’s Handicap Dan was looking for 9 points from Queens and to beat Peter to stand a chance of the league win. As I thought he might, Peter won on the night and gained top spot, even overtaking Kirsty for second place overall. Mike Frizzell wasn’t going to give up his second place from last year without a fight and with his best run of the season relegated Dan to third, which again is a great achievement for an M35 in the Handicap.

It’s been a great, competitive, fun, social season and I’m already working on 2019/20!

Gavin
