Day 3 Yewdale Fells
After 2 days of fine weather it was back to something not seen in the south of England for well ages – low cloud and heavy rain showers.
So with cagoules required it was off for another hike climb (not as bad as day 2!) to the start.
First 2 controls were quite close to the start so ok but then must have drifted off my bearing for 3 or not read the contours well but luckily a new fence clearly marked on the map steered me back in the right direction. Next 2 ok but then a long leg to 6 and now walking at times with vis less than 100m.I stuck to my bearing and tried to stay in contact with what little I could see. Just as the uncertainty started to creep in the clouds started to lift and the first thing I see is another orienteer who is much better than me but who had been trying to find said control for longer than me! So now able to see we both hit the target less than 50m in front of us.
I am someone who finds cagoules annoying at the best of times so after a reselling ( don’t know how to spell this an nor does spell check ! ) match to get it back in the bum bag and terrain I could now see I really enjoyed the rest of my run.
The terrain was high open fell comprising plenty of contour detail, crags, knolls and re-entrants interspersed with flatter marshy areas. Also helped by the map scale being 1:7500.
Great fun on an area I have not run on before.
