Club News

Hi everyone – before I talk about recent events, can I ask you to let me know asap if you are coming to the Presentation Social on February 25th – PLEASE don’t leave it to the last minute! The flier is attached.

So, onto recent events: some hardy members braved the poor weather conditions on New Year’s Day to attend Sarum’s excellent score event on Copehill Down, which incorporates a mock village that the army use for training. There were over 50 controls in the village itself plus 20-odd on the surrounding rough land. Although the rules were slightly different this time, I still ended up running round like a headless chicken in the village, not really knowing which controls I’d been to!  Consequently, I got a very poor points score. But others were much more sensible: Ian got 225 points (25th/201), Rob not far behind on 223 points and Lyra and Jolyon with 222. Excellent!

Last night we had our Poole Night League event based at the new venue of “The Quay” pub on… Poole Quay! The event was planned by Richard Arman, ably assisted by Tim and Ian. Many thanks to all of them.

We had a record turnout – 48, the best for a Night League event so far this season – and we would have had several more had some not had to cancel at the last moment for various valid reasons. Mind you, it was just as well as we only had 50 maps printed.

It was a fast and furious course with 19 runners getting all the controls. Gavin Clegg pipped Nick Barrable to 1st position with a time of 34.41. (Mind you, he did produce the excellent map, so knows the area like the back of his hand!)

WSX results were: Peter (4th), James (7th) and our newest member Alan Blanchflower in 10th. Welcome Alan – we love young, fast runners in the club! I must also mention Jon Brooke who, after a long, serious illness, is now getting back to his previously fast form and got all the controls and came equal 12th. A brilliant effort by all concerned.

Full results and League Tables are on our website: http://www.wessex-oc.org/night_league_details.htm
