Post Event Comments:

Monday 14th saw a good turnout at Sturminster Newton. Darren Whittington (M14) had planned a challenging course and you had to get the sequencing right to do well. There was a lot of discussion after the race as there were a few gates, shown as open on the map, but locked on the night. I (and others) took the view that even though there was a private sign on the gate both sides were shown as open to competition so it was therefore ok to climb over the gate. As a planner, organiser and mapper I am well aware that, especially for urban races, you often get permission to use areas not usually open to the public and as the map showed an open gate then it was ok to cross it. The ‘private’ sign in this case being irrelevant as if you were coming from the other direction, as was quite feasible, you wouldn’t have seen it. One of the difficulties for a planner of a score event is the infinite possible routes. This being the case, an up-to-date and accurate map is essential. Dick Keighley and the rest of the Whittingham family are to be thanked for another excellent nights competition.
